Almost a million IDPs, including Yazidi refugees, remain in Kurdistan
Approximately one million internally displaced people (IDPs), including Yazidi refugees are still in camps in Iraqi Kurdistan, nine years after ISIS (Daesh) attacked areas in Iraq and Syria.
Statistics released Monday, January 23, by the Bureau of Migration and Displacement of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Interior Ministry show that it is more than 665,000 IDPs and more than 248,000 refugees, that is more than 913,000 people by the end of 2022.
Last year's statistics show that there were a total of 664,798 IDPs living in Kurdistan. The number of IDPs in camps was 174,706, of which only 102 Yazidi minority returned to their places of residence. However, the number of new IDPs or returnees to camps was 230, and the number of settlers outside camps was 490,092.
The statement notes that last year Kurdistan received a total of 248,434 refugees (93,966 of whom lived in camps and 154,468 remained outside of camps).
As a safe haven in the Middle East, Kurdistan has received nearly two million IDPs and Syrian refugees since 2014 after they faced IS brutality in their hometowns. The Yazidi minority has suffered the most, with ethnic cleansing, killings, captivity and enslavement.
The humanitarian move by Kurdistan has been praised by many foreign countries and international organizations.
