Georgia and Azerbaijan have jointly implemented very important historical projects and the relations between the countries have been tested by time, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said at a plenary discussion during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

The Georgian delegation headed by Garibashvili takes part in the annual WEF in Davos, during which he holds intensive meetings with both world leaders and large international investor companies.

According to Garibashvili, relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan are at a high level, he noted the importance of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway modernization project.

The project will be completed by the end of 2024 and will increase the capacity of BTK from 25 million tons to 48 million tons.

"Now we are working with Azerbaijan on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. A few months ago, Azerbaijan allocated additional funding to complete this project, and this project will be ready in 2024," the prime minister said.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was put into operation on October 30, 2017. The total length of the BTK is 826 km.

In 2021, the volume of cargo transportation along this railway amounted to 476.9 thousand tons.

Georgia and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations on November 18, 1992. The countries actively cooperate in the fields of trade, transport, energy, production and logistics.

The countries are strategic partners and actively cooperate both in a bilateral format and within the framework of international projects. In particular, projects of strategic importance for the entire region include the Baku–Tbilisi-Kars railway, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor.

Azerbaijan is one of the five main trading partners of Georgia.

The trade turnover between the countries in January-November 2022 increased by 16.9% compared to the same period in 2021 and amounted to about $1.2 billion.
