The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU is preparing a package of sanctions that will be directed against those who help Russia circumvent restrictions. This is how she responded to a question from CNN about how to keep Moscow from escaping sanctions.

Journalist Christiane Amanpour asked von der Leyen to comment on the topic as the European Commission chairman turned on from Davos, where the World Economic Forum is taking place.

"We hear, and I'm sure you've also seen reports that despite this [the imposition of sanctions], many of the banned goods are actually being transported by road, and especially, according to recent reports, from Georgia. How do you keep Russia from getting what it needs, even in the face of sanctions?" asked Amanpour

Christiane Amanpour recalled in this regard that the European Union has already imposed nine sanctions packages that are destroying the Russian economy. "They are working. And the next package will be directed against those who help Moscow evade restrictions.

"We see, of course, that there are attempts to circumvent [sanctions], and we cannot tolerate that. We have already started saying that we will make a list of people who buy technology or goods from the European Union and send them to Russia. But the 10th sanctions package is basically going to be about closing those loopholes, putting an end to that circumvention and creating widespread consequences for those who circumvent EU sanctions."

Earlier, the U.S. edition of The New York Times prepared a piece stating that Georgia could be used to transit subsanctioned goods to Russia. The ruling Georgian Dream party described the article as "a complete fabrication and gossip".
