Joint statement by the Prime Minister of Iraq and the United Nations on the decision of Yazidis to own their homes in Sinjar after 47 years of deprivation and persecution.

Due to discriminatory policies, about a quarter of a million Yazidi citizens of Iraq's Sinjar region have not had the right to own their own homes and agricultural land since 1975.

On December 12, 2022, the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved a decree on providing a comprehensive and permanent solution for Yazidis in Sinjar. The decree transfers ownership of residential land and houses in 11 residential complexes.

The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mr. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, stated: "The decision of the Government of Iraq to grant Iraqi Yazidis ownership of their homes in Sinjar, which they have been denied ownership of for more than 47 years due to an unfair exclusion policy pursued by the former dictatorial regime, comes in the context of the clear desire of the Iraqi Government to take care of the rights of The Iraqi minority, especially the respected Yazidi minority in Sinjar and the Nineveh Plain, this decision was one of the firm decisions of the Iraqi State, and it has been studied and presented in partnership with the UN".

For their part, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq and the Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasscher, welcome this decisive step taken by the Council of Ministers of Iraq, stating: "The decree represents the official recognition of the ownership of land and houses and will put an end to years of discrimination against Yazidis. We hope that he will ease the suffering of Yazidis and encourage their return to Sinjar".
