New graves of Yazidis have been discovered near the Shangal region. The local residents present remember and relive their pain every time new mass graves are discovered. Surviving witnesses of the atrocities and ethnic cleansing of the Yazidi people by ISIS terrorists tell:

"Our ancestors told us how radical Islamists attacked us in the past, killed, stole young girls and children, some part of the population was Islamized (forced to convert to Islam) and taken to other villages, but for us these were fairy tales of our grandparents, stories and scary one in the evenings that were hard to believe. But, on August 3, 2014, all these terrible stories turned into a terrible reality before our eyes.

A few weeks before the tragic event, Kurdish detachments came to us and promised to protect the Yazidi villages. They were joined by Yazidi militias who expressed a desire to defend their villages. We thought we were safe and we were protected.

On the evening of August 2, 2014, suddenly Kurdish detachments began to leave in a hurry, seizing weapons from the Yazidi militias. We realized that we were left alone with ISIS militants. Those who had cars tried to get their families out, but many did not have time to do that either.

On August 3, ISIS militants invaded our Yazidi villages in jeeps, drove into the village almost without a fight, surrounded and captured. Those militiamen who had weapons were taught to shoot, but the ISIS militants quickly killed them. In the center of the village, they gathered the entire population and taught them to sort men separately, young girls and children separately, and old people separately. Having gathered practically all the men, they began to beat and mock, and in the end, they began to shoot. It was a terrible sight, we will never forget it in our lives.

Those who tried to escape were shot on the spot. Young people, girls and children were taken out by trucks in an unknown direction, later we learned that they had become slaves and were being sold on wounds.

We, the surviving old men, were beaten and left in the village to bury our husbands, fathers and brothers".
