Tbilisi City Hall expects to complete the complete reconstruction of the metro stations in 3-4 years, said Vice Mayor Irakli Khmaladze.

The Mayor's Office is implementing a 55 million euro metro rehabilitation project jointly with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)

"Rehabilitation will definitely continue for several years, because we cannot immediately stop all stations for repairs. We will have to stop only two, maximum three metro stations at the same time". Khmaladze said. According to him, it takes up to a year to repair one metro station.

Simultaneously with this project, the Tbilisi City Hall has a project with the Asian Development Bank worth $ 16 million to expand the accessibility of metro stations.

The project will be implemented within the framework of the ADB program "Cities for Sustainable Development" and involves the improvement of both internal spaces and territories adjacent to the metro.

In particular, we are talking about the installation of additional entrances/exits at the Akhmeteli Theater and Marjanishvili stations, as well as improving the ground infrastructure, taking into account the requirements for persons with disabilities, 12 stations. Currently, this project is under development and tenders for design and technical documentation.

The Tbilisi Metro consists of 23 stations on two lines – Akhmeteli-Varketilskaya and Saburtalinskaya. The total length of the metro lines is 57 kilometers, of which the first line is 40 kilometers, and the second is 17 kilometers.

The Tbilisi Metro was put into operation in 1966. The first stage consisted of the Rustaveli—Didube section with six stations. The last station, State University, was opened in 2017.
