Work is underway on 90 bridges, of which 40 have already been built and vehicles are already moving on six completed bridges.

The movement of vehicles on certain sections of the road through the Rikoti Pass, connecting the western and eastern parts of Georgia, will open by the end of this year, the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure said in a statement.

The road through Rikoti is a key one — it connects eastern and western Georgia and is part of the East-West international highway. The new road, 51.6 kilometers long, will include 97 bridges and 51 tunnels, which will significantly reduce travel time.

Construction work is currently underway on all tunnels. According to the ministry, 34 tunnels have already been pierced, three of them have been put into operation.

In parallel, work is underway on 90 bridges, of which 40 have already been built and vehicles are already moving on six completed bridges.

The construction on the Rikoti Pass is divided into four sections: Chumateleti-Khevi — 11.6 km, Khevi-Ubisa — 12.2 km, Ubisa-Shorapani — 13 km and Shorapani-Argveta — 14.7 km.

The first two-kilometer two-lane section of the Khevi-Ubisa highway was opened to traffic in September 2021, the newly opened section of the road includes six bridges and three tunnels.

Currently, more than four thousand people are employed in the construction of the road through the Rikoti Pass, and about 68% of them are citizens of Georgia.

The construction of the Rikoti Pass section is a project of the century, which is being implemented on the most complex geographical route with the most complex engineering structures.

The Rikoti section will be a turning point in the construction of the expressway, as as a result of its implementation, the already built sections of the expressway in Eastern and Western Georgia will be connected to each other.

The speed of traffic on the Rikoti section, which now stands at 60 km/h, will be increased, in some sections almost twice and the new road will meet all modern road safety standards.

The project will create a space where the population of nearby villages will be able to sell their products with proper infrastructure. In particular, retail spaces will be organized in the following locations: Surami, Shrosha and Zestafoni.

The construction of sections on the Rikoti Pass costs up to 2.6 billion GEL and will be gradually completed by the end of 2023. Some sections are planned to be put into operation at the end of this year.

After the completion of construction of all sections of the road on the East-West highway from the Red Bridge (border with Azerbaijan) to Sarpi (border with Turkey), it will be possible to drive in 4-4.5 hours instead of eight.

The East-West Highway, or European Transit Road E-60, is the second largest European transit corridor, which begins in Brest (France) and ends in Irkeshtam (Kyrgyzstan).

In Georgia, the E-60 begins on the border with Azerbaijan and ends on the Black Sea coast. On the territory of Georgia the length of the corridor is 392 km.
