The opposition party "United National Movement" calls for the introduction of free meals in public schools in Georgia.

As the UNM deputy Ana Tsitlidze said at a briefing that they presented the relevant legislative initiative to the parliament. She appealed to the Government and the ruling Georgian Dream party to support this proposal.

"According to NDI surveys, every third citizen said that he does not have enough money to feed his family. This means that every third child in this country is starving… It is necessary for the state to provide them with free meals", Tsitlidze said.

The deputy also referred to the data of a survey of the public movement "Voice" conducted last year among schoolchildren. 77% said that they feel hungry during lessons. At the same time, 35% indicated that this happens all the time and 42% chose the answer option "sometimes".

About 549 thousand students study in public schools of Georgia. According to the calculations of the UNM, the free lunch program will cost more than 100 million GEL per year. Tsitlidze is sure that these funds can be found if the budget is properly allocated.

Voice had previously launched a campaign demanding free lunches for children. "The United National Movement promised free meals to schoolchildren during the campaign last fall.

In December 2021, Minister of Education And Science of Georgia Mikheil Chkhenkeli stated that the government was working on the issue.
