For almost a year, the parliament has been unable to form a government and political impasse has come at the expense of vital services to rebuild from conflict, address economic hardship, and create stability that is crucial to the wellbeing of the nation.
Iraq needs a government that can act, not one paralyzed by corruption and infighting. The Iraqi people have the right to make their voices heard and peacefully demand better governance from elected officials. Their calls should be met with a commitment to restore government function and essential services rather than sectarian militarization.
The path to good governance is through peaceful democratic processes with government transparency and care for the will of the people. To progress together as a nation, all sides must refrain from violence and listen to each other to find a way forward.
Iraqis have been affected by conflict for far too long, and the loss of life in Iraq this week is one in a long line of tragedies. We can honor those who were killed and injured by uniting for the sake of rehabilitation: bolstering economic opportunity, strengthening good governance, and supporting social cohesion. I will continue to advocate for the Iraqi government to serve all of its people, especially marginalized groups, women, and religious minorities like the Yazidis.
