Georgia will receive the status of a candidate for EU membership after it fulfills the recommendations of the European Commission, President of the European Council Charles Michel said, speaking in the European Parliament.
"The Kremlin's war against Ukraine marked a tectonic shift on our continent and created a new geopolitical reality. Last week, together with 27 EU leaders, we made several important geopolitical decisions. First, we decided to recognize the European perspective of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. The future of these countries and their peoples are in the EU," Michel said.
According to him, the leaders of the EU member states also discussed the idea of creating a "European political community", in which, among other things, states that seek to join the community will be able to participate. As Michel pointed out, we are talking about a "fairly soft and flexible political platform" that will work on topics such as energy, security, and healthcare.
The recommendations of the European Commission for Georgia consist of 12 points. These include overcoming polarization, de-oligarchizing, reforms of the courts and the electoral system. They should assess whether Georgia has coped with the fulfillment of the conditions by the end of 2022.
