The National Communications Commission of Georgia is preparing to deploy a commercial 5G network in the country and expand high-speed mobile Internet. About this in an interview with bm.ge was informed by the head of the department Ekaterina Imedadze.

"We are preparing for implementation… The fifth generation is unique in that it is impossible to use existing frequencies or increase the volume and speed of the Internet. I think news should be expected this year. We are preparing to issue frequency licenses," Imedadze said.

Granting permission to use the frequencies necessary to create a 5G infrastructure is considered the main difficulty of launching a new generation network commercially.

The second reason is low profitability for mobile operators due to the high cost of equipment. For example, Gia Dzhokhtaberidze, the founder of one of the largest telecommunications companies in Georgia, Magticom, recently called for a delay in the deployment of a commercial 5G network, pointing out that "in today's Georgian realities" it will be unprofitable for operators.

Mobile Internet consumption in Georgia is growing from year to year. As of April 2022, data traffic in cellular networks exceeded 33.5 million GB, which is 42% more than last year. The number of mobile Internet users in April exceeded 3.3 million, which is 13% more than in 2021.

The head of the communications Commission points out that the growth of consumption is an irreversible process. The regulator monitors operators – inspections, speed measurements, coverage monitoring are regularly carried out, but with the introduction of a new generation of communications, all these problems would be solved automatically, Imedadze stressed.
