US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried noted in an interview with Netgazeti that Georgian citizens should not be disappointed by today's decision of the European Commission, as it confirms that Georgia is a member of the European family.

"My visit to Tbilisi has become more emotional because of the decision taken by the European Commission. Every Georgian I talked to mention the decision of the European Commission even before it was announced. I think there was a lot of expectation before the decision was announced, and even after the decision was announced.

I expressed regret to all my interlocutors about this decision. I am shocked by the fact that more than 80% of the country's population — 80-85% of Georgian citizens — support Georgia's accession to the European Union. This is a phenomenal statistic," she said.

Georgia now has a very clear roadmap of reforms that it is already working on. Thus, the message for Georgia is: accelerate the progress of reforms, and you will receive the status of a candidate.

The final decision on granting the status after the publication of the recommendation of the European Commission will be made by the European Council on June 23-24.
