This week, thanks to funding from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a courthouse was reopened in Sinjar, Iraq, where most of the Yezidi population lives.

"The courthouse, which provides important legal services such as the administration of justice and embodies law and order, was seriously damaged during the occupation of ISIS (Daesh) terrorists," the UNDP said in a press release.

The courthouse is an important institution that serves more than 25,000 people in the Sinjar area. Local Yezidi residents hope for employment at the courthouse.

As noted in the press release, the project was implemented as part of the flagship program of the Stabilization Financing Fund.
"Since 2015, USAID has invested about $400 million in the Stabilization Financing Fund, including more than $ 10 million in Sinjar, which made it a leading partner of the fund's program," the report said.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Iraq, Zena Ali Ahmad, noted that the reopening of this facility is an important milestone on the way to the restoration of Sinjar and the establishment of the rule of law in the area. Rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring basic services, such as the Sinjar Courthouse, is key to creating a safe and dignified environment for Yazidi families who choose to return to Sinjar.

Thanks to the support of USAID, the United Nations Development Program was able to give priority attention to the support of the Yezidis who survived the genocide.
