The Irish Senate has adopted a resolution in support of Georgia, calling on the European Union to grant Georgia the status of a candidate country in the EU.
According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, Dublin believes that granting candidate status will help Georgia get closer to the EU and continue to successfully carry out reforms.
"The Irish Senate supports the enlargement of the European Union by joining countries to European norms and values, sincerely fulfilling their obligations to the European Union and continuing their efforts towards European integration," the Foreign Ministry said.
The upper house of the Irish Parliament notes the progress Georgia has made towards integration into the EU and points out that it is extremely important to have a unified approach to the members of the "Associated Trio" (Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova), "considering the geopolitical context."
"The shutdown of any country from the process will have a devastating impact on pro-European sentiment and will give Russia the green light for other unpredictable destructive actions," the resolution of the Irish Senate says.
