The Georgian Customs has suspended more than 90 operations due to suspicion of a possible violation of sanctions against Russia. This was announced by the Minister of Finance of Georgia Lasha Khutsishvili.
The Minister stressed that the country bears full responsibility for the implementation of international sanctions.
According to Khutsishvili, even though more than three months have passed since the sanctions were imposed, the Georgian Customs Service has not recorded a single case of transportation of sub-sanctioned products.
Georgia has not imposed its own sanctions against Russia and continues to maintain trade relations with it. At the same time, the country joined the sanctions imposed by the EU and the United States. This obliges the Georgian government to ensure that American and European products under sanctions are not transported across the Georgian-Russian border.
Khutsishvili noted that Georgia informs its Western partners about every suspicious transaction – the countries from which goods are sent through Georgia.
"We have established good communication with the relevant structures of the United States and each EU member state.
There are no questions or doubts about the process of applying sanctions in Georgia. On the contrary, the Georgian Customs is considered a reliable partner.
When it comes to hundreds of thousands of customs operations, there is some risk of error, but Georgia is a reliable customs partner in this regard," Khutsishvili said during an online discussion devoted to the practical analysis of Western sanctions against Russia and challenges to the Georgian economy.
