Italy will support Georgia in the process of joining the EU and NATO.
This was stated by Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili after a meeting with his Italian counterpart Sergio Matarella in Rome.

Position on NATO

"This is an alternative path for Georgia [joining NATO], which Italy will also support – participation in exercises, our cooperation in various missions or support for us in NATO. This is the way where we know that Italy supports us," Zurabishvili said.

As a rule, analysts consider Italy to be among the countries opposed to Georgia's accelerated entry into NATO. Today, Zurabishvili pointed out that, considering the "new world challenges", the geopolitical situation is changing, and "the Caucasus, as such, and Georgia, are becoming increasingly important."

Separately, the Georgian President mentioned the "Black Sea strategy". Rome believes that this concept should be designed to preserve peace and stability so that joint projects in the Black Sea can be implemented in the future.

EU accession

In two weeks, Italy and all other EU member states will have to decide whether to grant Georgia the status of a candidate for joining the union. According to Zurabishvili, Rome supports the position of Georgia, which aspires to become a "full member of Europe."
"Italy is one of the European countries that strongly supports Georgia's integration and supports us on this difficult but very important path," Zurabishvili said.

The President of Georgia is making a state visit to Italy for the first time in the last 25 years. During the trip, Zurabishvili is also scheduled to meet with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Senate President Maria Elisabeta Alberti-Casellati, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Roberto Fico and Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri.
