Five scenarios of fate for Georgia in the EU

The options for the European Commission's response to Georgia's application for the status of a candidate country were analyzed by the Netgazeti columnist.
1. Obtaining the status of a candidate without additional conditions. This happened to Northern Macedonia in 2005.
2. Obtaining a status with conditions and obligations. This was the case with Montenegro in 2010 and there were seven conditions for it.
3. The status of a potential candidate. This was the case with Albania in 2009 and five years later it received the status of a candidate. The newspaper's sources consider this scenario the most likely for Georgia.
4. A promise statement without specific deadlines, as in the case of NATO at the Bucharest summit.
5. Postponement of decision-making.
A complete failure is considered unlikely.
Georgia and Moldova applied for EU membership on March 3, following Ukraine. The countries have already passed the first stage — they have filled out the questionnaires of the European Commission, mandatory for all countries applying for the status of candidates.
EU Ambassador to Georgia Karl Hartzel said today that the European Commission will present its opinion on the applications of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova for the status of a candidate for EU membership in two to three weeks.
