Perishable products that are exported from Georgia will be given a special green status so that trucks do not stand in queues, Iva Chkonia, president of the Distributors Association, said in an interview with News-Georgia.
"This mechanism is already in effect. The green corridor is provided at all checkpoints for perishable export goods — fruits and vegetables, first, at Kazbegi-Upper Lars, through which the largest flow goes," Chkonia said.
According to him, 90 percent of the supplies of Georgian agricultural products now pass through the Georgian-Russian land border.
To get a "green corridor", the patrol police and at the border need to present documentation confirming that the cargo is perishable. In this case, it will take from 24 to 36 hours for the cargo to leave the territory of Georgia.
"This spring, the number of cargoes has grown significantly, no one was ready for this. The throughput on Lars was about 500-600 cars, now there are about three thousand. This has become a huge problem for those who carry vegetables, fruits and greens," Chkonia explained.
At the same time, the passage of goods on the Russian side is much slower than on the Georgian side.
He noted that the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources promptly responded to the appeal of the Distributors Association to launch "green corridors". The operational meeting at which the issue was resolved was held with the participation of representatives of customs and police.
"In the conditions of the war in Ukraine, Georgia has become one of the main transport corridors, the flow of goods is growing rapidly. The difficult situation is not only on Lars. And we are approaching the fruit picking season, so the problem has started to be solved in a timely manner," Chkonia stressed.
The head of the Distributors Association said that the organization is ready to provide consulting assistance and invites suppliers to contact it directly in case of difficulties.
Earlier, the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance stated that due to the sharp increase in traffic flow at the borders, all customs points of Georgia have been transferred to an emergency mode of operation.
