The taboo on education for Yezidi girls

Today, the Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yezidis would like to discuss such a problem as the education of girls in the Yezidi community.

It goes without saying that the progress and prosperity of the Yezidi nation largely depend on the choice of education. Education is the foundation of the infrastructure of any nationality, it is the most powerful tool for change. We Yazidis need to set a goal of reducing marginal Yazidi families who do not give education to their children, especially girls. The lack of education leads to the asceticism of the community.

Empowerment for Yazidi women is a process aimed at finding themselves and their place in the society of the modern world. If the conservative views of the Yezidi patriarchal system do not change, then soon we will see a picture of how Yezidi women will be marginalized.

When it comes to marginal Yezidi families, it is difficult not to mention the problem of early marriages, the practice of early marriages is another serious obstacle to women's education. Girls are taught not to object, to remain modest and submissive in their behavior. The movement of girls is usually restricted, especially as they grow up, while boys are encouraged to assert themselves. The causal explanation for this behavior is that after marriage, girls should do their homework and look after relatives, husband, and children, and not fill their heads with such "nonsense as education". Girls need to be trained in such a way that later they do not face difficulties in adapting to their married life. Naturally, for such families, access to education, for girls, is a disaster and something unimaginable.

We are talking not only about academic education, but also about school education. Just, most often such families are not allowed to receive even a school education.

As a result, we have such a picture – if you are "lucky" to be born a boy in a marginal Yezidi family, then you have a chance to get an education, but if you are a girl, then everything is clear without words. Discrimination in such families in relation to the female sex does not color us Yezidis at all.

If we had not been silent and worked on these problems, we could have come to understand that for such marginal Yezidi families, the education of women could be perceived as a threat to the existing status quo, i.e., their patriarchal world would simply collapse. In fact, our silence leads to the asceticism of our Yezidi nation, as well as to an internal cultural split.
