Shahin Khalaf, a Yazidi by origin, is considered one of the rare and remarkable examples in Iraqi society who tried to end discrimination based on religion or belief, he worked hard to defeat discrimination and racism, especially in Mosul. Shaheen is a graduate of Dahuk University, Department of Arabic.
After the ethnic cleansing of the Yezidi people on August 3, 2014, Shahin survived and lived in the Khanki complex of the Sumail district of the Dahuk Governorate. Shahin helped students and worked as a lecturer in one of the schools for displaced Yezidis, and then worked in the field of humanitarian assistance to the victims of ISIS, women and their children who were subjected to the most terrible crimes by ISIS terrorists in Iraq and Syria.
His positions are still considered a living model for strengthening and overcoming discrimination in all its senses. His position made headlines in newspapers and websites devoted to humanitarian issues.
ISIS has committed many crimes against the Yazidis of Iraq, and other representatives of national minorities have also been hit by terrorists. These crimes have created social discord and emptiness among authentic Iraqi components. These voids still exist, despite the presence of hundreds of international and local organizations working to overcome them.
Why did the Yazidis become the biggest victim of ISIS? Because this terrorist group simply considered the Yezidis to be infidels and apostates, far from humanitarian concepts calling for coexistence and brotherhood. According to their beliefs, humanity needs sacrifices, solidarity, and unification without regard to race, religion. Nationalism, the crimes of ISIS, which primarily depended on religion, were the main motivation for Shaheen's work to put an end to such behavior, which does not promote, but rather delays the existence of equality and social justice in Iraqi society, in Mosul.
Another problem that Shahin Khalaf faced was the difficulty of working with the rescued, with survivors of conflicts and wars, especially with those who were under the control of the most ferocious terrorist organization that the world has seen recently, and this organization called on those under its control to kill and enslave the Yazidi people.
Shahin instilled the spirit of humanity in every person in his society and is still considered a model that society is proud of, he contributed to the activation of social relations between the entire Sinjar population.
Shahin was fatally wounded by a shot while rescuing a Muslim girl, despite 13 days of treatment in a Baghdad clinic, the young man died.
One of his friends describes Shahin Khalaf like this after his death:
"Maybe he couldn't free all the children, but he had a lot of information about their whereabouts, the coordinates of which he gave to the Iraqi army, the Americans from international coalitions and others. I was with him when he rescued Ayman's child and several other people. He was ready to sacrifice his soul to save any oppressed person — whether Muslim, Christian or Yazidi."
Many newspaper websites headlined the story of Commander Shaheen as follows: "An Iraqi Yazidi gave his life saving a girl taken hostage by ISIS," "A Yazidi saved a Muslim girl from ISIS captivity at the cost of his life."
The whole of Mosul was greatly affected by the news of Shahin's martyrdom, the youth of the Sinjar district still demand to erect a monument to martyr Shahin Khalaf in Mosul in memory of his efforts to liberate the city, but the Iraqi authorities and the media ignored the hero's story, which the common people will not forget.
Such a leader will change generations and the future of the whole society, achieve equality and social justice, and dispel extremist ideas. These are golden keys that cannot be seen at any time and in any place, so we hoped to shed light on such exemplary touching stories that can be used even in school programs.
