The commissioning of several more sections of the new road on the Rikot Pass is scheduled for the end of the year, the Department of Highways of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure confirmed.
The road through Rikoti is a key one — it connects eastern and western Georgia and is part of the East-West international highway.
An ambitious project worth about a billion dollars began several years ago. The new road with a length of 51.6 kilometers will include 97 bridges and 51 tunnels and will significantly reduce travel time.
Currently, work is being carried out simultaneously on most of the facilities. 16 tunnels have already been breached, construction work has been completed on three tunnels and six bridges. More than four thousand people are employed at the construction site, 68% of whom are citizens of Georgia.
The first section was opened in 2021 — two kilometers on the Khevi-Ubisa road.
The construction on the Rikot Pass is divided into four sections: Chumateleti-Khevi — 11.6 km, Khevi-Ubisa — 12.2 km, Ubisa-Shorapani — 13 km and Shorapani-Argvet — 14.7 km.
The construction of the road through Rikoti is planned to be completed in stages by 2024. The Department of Highways promises that the speed of traffic on the highway, which is now about 60 km / h, will increase significantly, and in some sections it will almost double.
The East-West Highway, or European Transit Road E-60, is the second largest European transit corridor, which begins in Brest (France) and ends in Irkeshtam (Kyrgyzstan). In Georgia, the E-60 begins on the border with Azerbaijan and ends on the Black Sea coast. On the territory of Georgia, the length of the corridor is 392 km.
