Nobel laureate, Yezidi human rights activist Nadia Murad publicly addressed the world community and the Iraqi government about the armed conflict between the Iraqi army and the Shangal Self-Defense Unit (YBS):
"The Yezidis in Sinjar (Shangal) unite and demand an end to political instability and armed conflicts in the region. Peaceful protest is their legitimate right and a matter of pride.
We call on the international community and the Iraqi Government to meet the demands of the people of Sinjar and establish peace and stability in this already difficult time. We hope that everyone will stand in solidarity with Sinjar who are peacefully protesting."
