The Secretary of the Kurdistan Parliament, Muna Kahwachi, rejects attempts by some political parties to reduce the number of seats in parliament by quota allocated to ethnic and religious minorities, calling such efforts a violation of their rights. Such actions will lead to the deprivation of the rights of the Yezidi minority to have a representative in parliament.

"The quota of seats for ethnic and religious minorities in the Kurdistan Parliament was established to protect their rights, in particular the Yezidi minority, and to ensure fair representation in parliament. Unfortunately, some political parties are now trying to push our democracy back by threatening to reduce these quotas. No political party has the right to decide the future of communities or their political direction in their personal or party interests. These actions are illegal and are completely rejected by them," Kahvachi said.

According to the Secretary, the Yezidi minority of the Kurdistan region reject any attempts by political parties to reduce their quotas for seats. She also considers these efforts a violation of the rights of these minorities and the basic principle of peaceful coexistence in the Kurdistan region.

List of parties that have long opposed granting quotas to the Yezidi minority in the Kurdistan Parliament:

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)

Movement for Change (Gorran)

Islamic Union of Kurdistan (LAWSUIT)

Kurdistan Justice Assembly (KJG)

The New Generation Movement (NGM).

The Kurdistan Parliament consists of 111 members elected by popular vote every four years. Eleven deputies represent Christian, Turkmen Armenian and 1 representative representing the interests of the Yezidi minority. Political parties are guaranteed places to ensure the participation of all ethnic and religious components of the Kurdistan region in the political process.
