Camps for Yazidi refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Kurdistan Region will remain open, said Louk Ghafuri, head of the Foreign Media Relations Department of the Council of Ministers of the Government of the Kurdistan Region (PKK).
Recall that the places of residence of the Yezidi minority of Shangal (Sinjar), nearby towns and villages were practically destroyed to the ground during the attack and mass destruction of the Yezidi people by the terrorist organization ISIS in 2014.
Rehabilitation works and construction are practically not carried out in the places of residence of the Yezidi population, despite the huge amounts of funding from Western countries. Where millions of dollars of financial aid for reconstruction work go remains a question. 80% of humanitarian aid simply does not reach the Yezidis.
With the sums allocated for the restoration of houses, infrastructure, roads, hospitals and schools, it was possible to restore from scratch all the villages and districts where the Yazidis live, but, unfortunately, as we see, everything remains in ruins. And all those construction projects that are being carried out are private sponsorship investments from Yazidi businessmen living abroad, as well as restoration projects are carried out by Nadia Murad's organization, the Nadia Initiative. Such humanitarian aid is not stolen just because representatives of these organizations are on the spot and control construction and rehabilitation work.
Currently, more than 100,000 Yazidi refugees and displaced persons live in the Kurdistan region in camps and beyond. In mid-October 2020, the Federal Government announced a plan to close camps for displaced persons in the country.
The PKK stated that the camps in the Kurdistan Region will function if they are needed. At the same time, the Kurdish government noted that this requires an increase in international funding.
Necessities for many camp residents are provided by the UN, various international organizations. Nevertheless, as the government of Iraq and Kurdistan announces, they take on most of the costs.
