Tourism in Georgia is slowly reviving
Most often last year, citizens of Turkey, Russia and Armenia came to Georgia.
The number of visits of international travelers to Georgia in 2021 amounted to 1.9 million, which is 7.7% more than in 2020, and almost 80% less than in 2019, according to the National Tourism Administration.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused enormous damage to Georgian tourism, which occupies an important place in the country's economy. In the pre-pandemic period, in 2019, the industry's successes were record-breaking. The number of international travelers exceeded 9.3 million, and revenues amounted to $ 3.3 billion.
The end of 2021 with an increase in the number of foreign travelers was a pleasant surprise. In the period from January to November last year, the total number of visits amounted to 1.7 million people, which is 1.6% less than in the 11 months of 2020.
According to the National Administration, December played a big role in the positive statistics of tourism growth last year, when international travelers made 178.16 thousand visits to Georgia, of which 144.6 thousand were tourist. At the same time, the number of tourist visits increased by 239% compared to the same period last year.
In 2020, 1.7 million foreign tourists visited the country, of which about 1.1 million people visited Georgia in January-February, that is, before the first case of coronavirus was detected in the country.
If not for the pandemic and the trend of tourism growth remained at the same level as in January-February 2020 (+10.2%), by the end of the year Georgia would have once again broken its record.
Leaders on visits to Georgia
The largest number of visits to Georgia in 2021 was carried out by Turkish citizens – 326.5 thousand, which is 2.7% less than in 2020, and 71.8% less than in 2019.
The number of representatives of the Georgian diaspora visiting their historical homeland has also increased. Last year they entered Georgia 151.6 thousand times. This is 8% more than in 2020.
