For those who often use public transport, with the introduction of a subscription system, travel will become cheaper, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze told reporters.
Kaladze was hit by a barrage of criticism after he announced the introduction of a subscription payment system in public transport from February. The fare will be at least 1 GEL per day for 90 minutes of unlimited trips by public transport, and a maximum of 250 GEL for an annual pass for an unlimited number of trips.
"Such a system operates in all developed countries. We are implementing it in Georgia, and we have been talking about it since 2017, when we started the transport reform. This is one of the components of the reform. A person chooses which subscription to use. It can be a weekly subscription, more focused on tourists. It can be a one-day, monthly, three-month or annual travel. The user decides which subscription will suit him," Kaladze said.
The Mayor is confident that with the new subscription system, Tbilisi residents will be able to save on public transport trips.
"We have complete data on how many people use public transport and how many times a day. No one knows everything better than us. Therefore, for people who often use public transport, travel will eventually become cheaper," Kaladze said.
Since February, residents of Tbilisi have been offered to get tickets for public transport. A one-day unlimited card will cost 3 lari, an unlimited subscription for a week – 20 lari, for a month - 40 lari, for three months – 100 lari, for six months -150 lari, for a year - 250 lari.
