Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi announced that the federal government has allocated 28 billion dinars (approximately $19 million) for the process of rebuilding the Shangala region, where the Yazidi population lives.
The Office of the Governor of Nineveh said in a press release that the Prime Minister ordered the creation of a committee to oversee the restoration of the Yezidi district of Shangal. According to the press release, Governor Najim al-Jabouri himself is expected to head a committee, which will include a group of local officials, and will be responsible for developing a plan to restore the area and its infrastructure.
All these events are taking place at a time when the situation in Shangala has not yet been normalized due to the ongoing instability caused by the presence of pro-Iranian Shiite militias Hashd al-Shaabi and PKK militants.
Under the auspices of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) The Government of the Kurdistan Region (PKK) and the Federal Government of Iraq reached an official agreement in October 2020 on the normalization of the situation in Shangala.
However, the agreement has yet to be implemented, as Shiite militias and militants affiliated with the PKK refuse to leave the Yezidi district.
