The ruling Georgian Dream party does not think that the National Movement will achieve the desired result by a mass hunger strike.
The hunger strike of several fanatics is not a reason to release ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili from prison, the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party says.
The day before, the chairman of the United National Movement party, Nika Melia, said at a protest rally on Saakashvili's birthday that they were starting an indefinite mass hunger strike and would not stop it until the ex-president was released.
"There is an internal party crisis in the National Movement, they cannot concentrate, they unite for the most unworthy goal – the release from prison of Mikhail Saakashvili, a man who is guilty. He cannot be released just because fanatics are starting a hunger strike," Nino Tsilosani, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agrarian Issues, told Rustavi 2 TV channel.
The first deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science, Georgy Amilakhvari, believes that the mass hunger strikes announced by the "National Movement" are like "kindergarten fairy tales".
"It's probably inconvenient when you invite several hundred people to a birthday party, and then call on them to start a hunger strike. Moreover, it is unclear why tents for the hungry need to be installed outside in the cold, and not in the party office, where it is warm. It's already like a kindergarten-level fairy tale and nothing else," Amilakhvari said.
The ex-President of Georgia, sentenced in absentia in Georgia to six years in two criminal cases, is in custody and is currently undergoing rehabilitation after a 50-day hunger strike in a military hospital in Gori.
Three more cases against Saakashvili are in court proceedings. Today, on December 22, the Tbilisi City Court will consider one of them - the illegal crossing of the border by the ex-president.
