Iraq says it is currently impossible to close the camps where Yazidi refugees are in Kurdistan
The Federal Government of Iraq has stated that it is impossible to close the camps where Yazidi refugees and internally displaced persons are still in the Kurdistan Region.
Iraq's Minister of Migration and Displacement, Ivan Fayik, said IDP camps in all other provinces had been closed, except for the Judda camp in Nineveh, which is expected to be closed by the end of this year.
She further explained that most of the displaced Yezidis from Shangala are still unable to return to their home areas due to the ongoing instability, as they expect that the situation in the region populated mainly by Yezidis will be normalized first.
The minister added that the Iraqi government will start cooperation with the Government of the Kurdistan Region (PKK) a little later, when the camps in the provinces of Erbil, Dahuk and Sulaymaniyah are ready to close.
Meanwhile, Karim Nuri, Deputy Minister of Migration and Displaced Persons, said that most of the internally displaced persons living in the Kurdistan camps are Yezidis from Shangal, Salahaddin and Mosul.
He also warned that the Iraqi Ministry is not able to financially manage IDP camps if international organizations do not continue to allocate funds to support this process.
The problem with the return of displaced persons is related to the fact that the (PKK) and the pro-Iranian Hashd al-Shaabi militias continue to refuse to leave Shangal, despite the official agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, reached since October 2020, on the normalization of the situation in the region.
