Last week, the remains of 41 Yezidis who were victims of the genocide committed by ISIS in 2014 were buried in the village of Kocho (Shangal). After the reburial procedure, a five-day mourning period was declared in the area.
The United Nations estimates that ISIS has killed about 5,000 Yazidi men and forced 7,000 women and girls into sexual slavery in Shangal. A UN team investigating the atrocities of ISIS has found clear and convincing evidence that the terrorists committed genocide against the Yazidi people.
The UN-supported exhumation process in Kocho began in March 2019 and continued throughout 2020. Now, 17 mass graves of Yezidis have been exhumed in Kocho, and 104 victims were buried earlier this year. The identification of the remains was carried out by the Iraqi Medical and Legal Department (MLD) of the Martyrs Foundation with the assistance of the UN Investigation Team on Bringing ISIS to Justice (UNITAD) and the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP).
Although Iraq and UNITAD are doing everything possible to identify the victims, hundreds of bodies remain unidentified due to a lack of human resources and financial support.
The surviving Yezidi and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad also hails from Kocho. The Yezidis in Kocho were executed after ISIS captured the village. The women and girls of the village were abducted and enslaved.
