Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili promises to initiate a nationwide dialogue to achieve mutual understanding between the citizens of the country. She stated this today during a speech at the "Summit for Democracy".

"As President of Georgia, I pledge to initiate an inclusive process, a nationwide discussion with the participation of the whole society, in order to find a way to reach a common understanding of our recent history, to help overcome pain and move forward," Zurabishvili said.

According to the Georgian President, the national dialogue is "the most reliable way to a consolidated democracy, which no one can resist or threaten." At the same time, she added that it is impossible to talk about the present without understanding the past.

Zurabishvili considers the continuation of the country's movement towards integration into the EU and NATO to be another important condition for achieving mutual understanding. At the same time, she acknowledged that it would be impossible to overcome polarization without Georgia fulfilling its obligations to implement judicial and electoral reforms, as well as adopting a new national human rights strategy, an action plan to combat violence against women, and the concept of women's economic empowerment.

"The fulfillment of these commitments, no matter how important they may be, will be insufficient and imperfect if we do not find a way to overcome the polarization, hatred and division that has engulfed our country," she said.

The purpose of the first international "Summit for Democracy", organized by the administration of US President Joe Biden, is to decide on the creation of an alliance of democratic states. The summit is being held via videoconference and will last for two days, December 9-10.

More than 100 countries are invited to the summit, including liberal democracies, weaker democracies and several states with authoritarian systems.
