The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism of Kurdistan said on Sunday that in cooperation with experts from the prestigious Harvard University, they have discovered 750 archaeological sites on the plains of Erbil since 2012.
It is not known for certain who these archaeological sites belonged to. Based on ancient sources, the Yezidis lived on the territory of ancient Mesopotamia even before the first century AD. It is known for certain that the Yezidis from the 12th century AD lived in the current states such as Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. The Yezidis led a nomadic lifestyle and engaged in animal husbandry. This is stated in historical poems, hymns, and interpretations. Ancient graves, sculptures and monuments belonging to the Yezidi people were also found.
Now, it is of great importance who is conducting these archaeological excavations, how they will be presented to the whole civilized world, whether the evidence (objects) that directly indicate that these archaeological sites belong to the Yezidi people will not be destroyed.
It is known for certain that history, culture, language, burial sites, and architectural monuments belonging to the Yezidis have been destroyed for centuries.
Since archaeological excavations are being conducted on the territory of present-day Kurdistan, it will not be surprising that it will be announced worldwide that all objects and archaeological monuments belong to Kurds, not Yezidis.
In European countries, without fear of censuring radical Kurds, many representatives of the Kurdish elite, writers, businessmen and ordinary Kurds admit that a certain part of their ancestors were still Yezidis and now we are separated by religion.
The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism described in its statement the archaeological research project in the Erbil region as one of the most important enterprises they have led in this area.
According to the ministry, the Harvard University team is following these efforts, adding that the Erbil Antiquities Authority has registered the discovery of 750 archaeological sites.
In early November, Italian and Kurdish archaeologists announced that they had identified the remains of a 2,700-year-old wine press in Dahuk province that dates to the Assyrian Empire.
On September 21, archaeological groups operating in the province of Erbil announced the discovery of clay artifacts at the site where objects were found, the age of which is about 4000 years BC.
We still hope for an objective examination and establishment of the authenticity of the archaeological monuments found.
