A hearing on another case of ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili will be held today, November 15, in the Tbilisi City Court.
The meeting on the "case of jackets" is scheduled for 11:00. According to lawyer Beka Basilai, prisoner Saakashvili wants to attend the trial, despite health problems caused by a 45-day hunger strike.
"The court's request for the presence of Mikheil Saakashvili was sent (to the penitentiary service – NG) on Friday, so there are all procedural grounds for the transfer of Mikheil Saakashvili," Basilaya said.
The lawyer recalled that the state is obliged to take care of the protection of all the rights of the prisoner, including ensuring his direct participation in the trial.
"The case of jackets"
The investigation into the "case of jackets" has been going on for almost eight years. The case was qualified under Article 182 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which concerns large-scale embezzlement of budget funds and provides for imprisonment from 7 to 11 years.
We are talking about the embezzlement of more than 8.8 million lari in the period from September 2009 to February 2013. According to the prosecutor's office, this amount implies the payment of Saakashvili's expenses for holidays in fashionable hotels and resorts, visits to cosmetology clinics and the purchase of clothes. The list includes seven jackets and a cashmere sports coat purchased in London in the amount of 28.6 thousand dollars, as well as two handmade suits in the amount of 4.6 thousand dollars.
Mikhail Saakashvili declared the absurdity of the accusations. The ex-president of Georgia said that the government of the "Georgian Dream" opened this case only to undermine his image as a fighter against corruption.
In August 2014, on behalf of the Saakashvili family, the jackets and coats of the former Georgian leader were delivered by courier to the government office. The package was addressed to the founder of the Georgian Dream, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. The inscription on it read: "Mr. Ivanishvili, I am returning this to you for use at your personal discretion."
The security service did not appreciate the gesture. Then the personal belongings of the third President of Georgia were sent to the lost and found office. Later they were exhibited in the Presidential Library in Tbilisi.
