Eight local non-governmental organizations issued a joint statement calling on the Georgian authorities to immediately transfer former President Mikheil Saakashvili to an "alternative medical facility."
"We call on the authorities to take concrete steps to de-escalate the situation. In particular, the third President of Georgia should be immediately transferred to an alternative medical facility, where his dignity, life, health, and safety will be protected," the statement reads.
According to the NGO, public statements by representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream indicate that the decision to transfer Saakashvili to a prison medical institution "was made with their participation and at their request, ignoring the recommendations of the medical council and the public defender."
Noting that "the authorities bear full responsibility for the events taking place," the NGO stated that the government's decisions on the treatment of Mikheil Saakashvili "are not aimed at easing the serious political crisis in the country and are not dictated by the interests of the prisoner's health."
"Given the current political situation, the country may face civil unrest as a result of unjustified steps by the authorities," the NGO said, urging the government to take concrete steps to de-escalate the situation.
The statement was signed by the Democratic Initiative of Georgia, Transparency International - Georgia, the Open Society Foundation, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, the Institute for the Development of Freedom of Information, Rights Georgia, the Partnership for Human Rights and the “Shame” movement.
Saakashvili was taken to the prison hospital in Gldani against his will. The Ombudsman's office said that the environment in the prison hospital offends the dignity of the ex-president.
