Amendments on election campaigning in Georgia wanted to be adopted in an expedited manner but changed their mind.
In the coming days, the Parliament of Georgia will start considering amendments to the law "On Broadcasting" and the "Electoral Code" prohibiting pre-election advertising containing hate speech.
Amendments to the "Electoral Code" provide for a ban on the distribution in a public place of campaign material aimed at forming a negative attitude towards the candidate of an electoral subject. We are talking about stands, facades of buildings, various kinds of real estate or structures, as well as public transport.
The prohibition of the distribution of election advertising aimed at creating a negative attitude towards the candidate of the electoral subject is also stated in the amendments to the law "On Broadcasting".
The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Issues has been identified as the leading committee on the legislative package.
The initiators of the amendments insisted on considering the bills in an accelerated manner so that the innovation would come into force on the eve of the second round of local government elections scheduled for October 30, but during the discussion of the issue at the bureau, it was decided not to rush. The amendments will be considered within the time limits stipulated by the regulations.
The initiators of the package of bills are members of Parliament: Giorgi Amilakhvari, Shalva Papuashvili, Rati Ionatamishvili, Henri Ohanashvili, David Matikashvili, David Songulashvili, Eka Sepashvili, Gocha Enukidze, Guram Macharashvili, Aluda Gudushauri, Mikhail Sarjveladze, Nino Iobashvili, Alexander Batidze and Irakli Beraya.
