On October 12-13, the European Regional Forum on Human Rights was held in an online format. The main purpose of the event is to develop regional recommendations on conflict prevention and protection of the rights of national minorities. During the two-day discussions, the participants provided their recommendations on the main root causes of modern conflicts involving national minorities. Based on the discussions and contributions of the participants, the main result of the European Regional Forum will be a document with practical recommendations reflecting regional contexts and challenges. The recommendations will also be included in the thematic work of the Special Rapporteur for his report to the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council in March 2022. In addition, discussions at regional forums will serve as an informational basis for the work and recommendations of the 14th session of the Forum on Minority Issues, which will be held in Geneva in December 2021.
Our speakers Oksana Smoeva and David Babaev, in turn, provided several recommendations that will be able to prevent conflicts involving the Yezidi national minority.
You can read our recommendations below:
* Tighten control or "eliminate" the financing of organizations that incite hatred and xenophobia towards national minorities
* Create a monitoring group that will monitor political organizations trying to assimilate national minorities, in particular the Yezidis
* Under the auspices of UN and Council of Europe experts, periodically conduct seminars and lectures for the most marginalized Yezidi families on the issues of "Women's rights" and sexual minorities
* Make real efforts to create effective anti-discrimination mechanisms in the country that are aimed at countering veiled forms of discrimination in the Caucasus region
* Eliminate the components of domestic policy that actively encourage ethnic and religious xenophobia and intolerance, which is also intensified due to the asymmetric attitude of the titular nation to various ethnic minorities, to the Yezidis
* Certain structures that monitor etiquette in the media, the Office of the Public Defender, the relevant Parliamentary Committees to carry out annual monitoring to identify the use of hostile, offensive and xenophobic statements on ethnic grounds in print and electronic media.
