Why is the Ministry of Health of Georgia reduced funding from the state budget of 2022
The decrease in funding is caused by the expectation of a softening of the spread of the coronavirus and a decrease in the workload of the hospital sector, the Ministry of Health said.
According to the draft state budget for 2022, allocations for health care are reduced by 276.6 million lari to 1.73 billion lari, the explanatory note to the document says.
According to the deputy head of the Ministry of Finance Tamar Gabunia, the decrease in funding is caused by the expectation of a softening of the spread of the coronavirus and a decrease in the workload of the hospital sector.
"Vaccination of the population is being intensively carried out in Georgia this year, and based on this, the severe course of the pandemic should be mitigated. Since we do not expect such a large load, this has also affected the budget parameters," Gabunia told reporters.
In 2021, the budget aimed at managing the coronavirus pandemic (mobilization of medical institutions, costs for treatment, testing and examinations, vaccination, etc.) was 810 million lari. In comparison with the approved plan of this year, the budget has been reduced by GEL 310 million and will amount to 500 million next year.
The mobilization of fixed assets for the purchase of additional doses of vaccines will take place within the framework of loan projects of the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank.
The draft budget for 2022 is currently being considered in the Parliament of Georgia by committees, factions, and political groups. After the meeting on October 18, the Finance and Budget Committee will summarize all comments and send the draft for revision to the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.
According to the legislation, deputies will be able to review the draft once again and make their comments, and at the end of the year the final consideration and adoption of the draft state budget for 2022 will take place.
