A protest action demanding the appointment of early parliamentary elections and the release of ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili was held on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi.
The rally was organized by the movement of supporters of the ex-president, led by Georgian MP Tako Charkviani.
Several hundred people gathered at the rally. They held Georgian national flags and portraits of Saakashvili in their hands. The action began with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the tragedy in Batumi.
"There is mourning in the country and several times I have heard the opinion that now is the time of silence, but I want to say that now is not the time to be silent. During troubles and misfortunes, Georgians ring the bells… Corruption and illegal issuance of documents have led to the fact that today we are looking for our children under the rubble," Charkviani told reporters before the rally.
"The president exiled by Russia should not be judged by the government cooperating with Russia... Let's carry out reforms, we must eradicate corruption and proper, normal justice should consider all cases in this country. No selective justice and no corruption destroying our state — that's why we gathered on Rustaveli Avenue," Charkviani said.
She confirmed that their movement to join the action demanding the release of Saakashvili on October 14, announced by the chairman of the "United National Movement".
Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He is currently in Rustavi prison and has been on hunger strike for the tenth day. The ex-president does not admit the charges and calls himself a political prisoner.
In total, four criminal cases were opened against Saakashvili, two of them were sentenced. The politician was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison. In addition, the Interior Ministry launched an investigation into the illegal crossing of the border by the ex-president on September 29.
Actions in support of Saakashvili are regularly held near the prison. Supporters of the ex-president also come out to rallies in the regions. Demanding the release of the politician, Georgian emigrants hold rallies at the country's embassies in different cities of Europe and the United States.
