Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani held meetings with Yazidi leaders in Erbil, calling for the preservation of religious tolerance in the autonomous Kurdish region.
At his first meeting, Prime Minister Barzani welcomed the top religious Yezidi leaders Mir Hazim Tahsin Beg and Baba Sheikh Ali Elias Haji Nasir. During the meeting, the Prime Minister confirmed the support of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for the Yezidis - residents of the Sinjar district.
"The Prime minister stressed the KRG's efforts to support the federal and international reconstruction of the city of Shangal [Sinjar] to allow the Yezidis to return to their homes," Barzani's office said in a statement. This refers to the Yezidis who became internally displaced after the ISIS attack.
As part of efforts to return displaced Yezidis to their hometowns, the Governments of Erbil and Baghdad reached an agreement in October 2020 to normalize the situation in the Sinjar region populated by the Yezidi majority. According to the agreement, the Turkish Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Iranian-backed Shiite militias must leave the area, which will allow its reconstruction to begin.
For their part, the Yezidi leaders stressed the importance of this agreement for the protection of the Yezidi territories, and thanked Prime Minister Barzani for approving key local projects, including the designation of Sharia and Khankeh as subdistricts.
Also on Saturday, Masrour Barzani received Muslim leader Dr. Abdul Latif Ahmed, at a meeting with whom he stressed the importance of the role of religious scholars in rejecting extremist ideology, consolidating the values of coexistence and solidarity between various components in Kurdistan.
According to the statement, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the need for religious scholars to play a positive role in educating society, spreading the idea of peace and tolerance, protecting the achievements of the people of Kurdistan and supporting public peace.
