On the seventh anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, during which thousands of people were brutally killed, abducted and sold into slavery by ISIS terrorists, Yazidi activists called on the international community to help bring the missing Yazidi girls home.
"I have a message on behalf of the Yazidi women and girls who are still in captivity: today they are being held captive by ISIS, mainly in Syria and Iraq, "said Pari Ibrahim, founder and executive director of the Free Yazidi Foundation (FSE).
"Although efforts to identify and rescue them continue, progress is slow, we will never give up on their search. And today we call on the whole world to develop a serious plan for the return of our Yazidi women and girls. It's been seven years since they were abducted. The world should help us bring them home, " she said.
The Yazda organization, in a press statement, proposed the formation of a national security group with the participation of the US-led coalition against ISIL "to clarify the fate of approximately 2,950 Yazidi women and children who are still missing and are believed to be still held captive by ISIL. In its latest press release, the FSE said that as of May 2021, about 2,868 Yazidis are still missing.
"It is inconceivable that so many abducted Yazidis can remain missing and ignored seven years later. Unfortunately, we know that some of them were killed by ISIS or died as a result of suicide. They are probably still suffering at the hands of ISIL members or accomplices in Syria, Iraq or beyond. This is an abomination, " the FSE said in a statement.
The FCE called on the anti-ISIL coalition, the Government of Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government( PKK), the Autonomous Administration of North-Eastern Syria (AACAF), Interpol, UNITAD, UNAMI and other influential organizations to develop a plan and make serious efforts to find the abducted Yazidis who are still alive and suffering. With the help of the currently available intelligence and logistical means, progress can be made.
Last month, a Yazidi woman, Zeri Matto Shivan, was found in Deir ez-Zor province in Syria and returned to her family in Shangal. In early January, the local authorities of Syria found two surviving Yezidis, Asim Jassem Khedr and Najla Said Ismail.
Yazidi leaders have in the past appealed to Western diplomats and the international community to do more to save hundreds of Yazidi women and children who are still missing.
