Experts do not rule out that restrictions will have to be introduced in Georgia against the background of a sharp increase in the spread of coronavirus infection. Epidemiologists say that this week they will closely monitor the rate of vaccination and the number of infected people.

"This week is crucial both in terms of vaccination, in terms of assessing the number of infected people and predicting the next days. So we need more vaccinated people, more caution, use masks more often, especially in an enclosed space… And, most importantly, stop organizing and attending parties, weddings, commemorations, since being in the same space with 2-3 people infected with the delta strain of coronavirus is quite enough for dozens of people to be infected," said Ivane Chkhaidze, medical director of the M. Iashvili Tbilisi Children's Clinic.

Experts believe that cases of infection will increase.

Epidemiologist Otar Chokoshvili notes that the country has not yet reached the peak of the spread of the coronavirus.

"It is difficult to say when we will reach the peak, but it will take several weeks. If the number of cases increases rapidly, the situation will already become very complicated. This may be followed by an increase in mortality, and in this case, the country will face the inevitable need to introduce restrictions," Chokoshvili said.

Currently, Georgia is experiencing the fourth wave of coronavirus. More cases of coronavirus infection are recorded per day than it was during the peak of the third wave.

Epidemiologists attribute this increase in infection to the spread of new strains of coronavirus. To date, there are a British strain, an Indian or delta strain, as well as a delta-plus strain in Georgia. Experts expect that the Indian strain will completely replace the British one in August.
