The United Kingdom urges all political parties in Georgia to remain committed to the spirit of the April 19 agreement and to focus their efforts on implementing the judicial, electoral and constitutional reforms provided for in this treaty. This is stated in the statement of the British Embassy in Georgia.

"The United Kingdom is concerned about the recent statement of the ruling Georgian Dream party on the unilateral withdrawal from the agreement of April 19, aimed at overcoming the political impasse. We believe that it is in Georgia's interests for all political parties to work together to achieve political stability and consensus for the benefit of the entire Georgian people," the statement reads.

The embassy points out that stable democracy is an important prerequisite for Georgia's progress on the path of Euro-Atlantic integration. At the same time, the statement emphasizes that "recent events, including the unrestrained attacks on journalists covering Tbilisi Pride on July 5, have raised doubts about the political trajectory of Georgia."

The United Kingdom expresses its readiness to help Georgia "take advantage of the opportunity to develop strong democratic institutions that are so necessary to ensure stability and increase resilience to external threats."

On July 28, Georgian Dream unexpectedly announced its withdrawal from the political agreement signed on April 19 with part of the opposition with the mediation of the EU and the United States and under the auspices of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. Thus, the Georgian authorities refused to call early parliamentary elections if the ruling party does not gain 43% in the local elections this autumn.

Speaking about the reasons for the decision, the GM said that more than half of the opposition deputies, including the country's largest opposition party, United National Movement, have not signed the document yet, but international partners leave this fact without reaction.

At the same time, the Georgian Dream stressed that the main requirements of the agreement have been fulfilled – the co-owner of the opposition TV channel Mtavari, Georgy Rurua, and the chairman of the UNM, Nika Melia, have been released from prison, and large-scale reforms have been launched in the country. Based on this, the GM believes that the agreement "has fulfilled its mission and has exhausted itself", 100 days after its initiation.

The GM's decision was commented on by Charles Michel himself. He noted that the agreement of April 19 " continues to offer a European way to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in Georgia." At the same time, the President of the European Council said that he was starting meetings with politicians from Georgia, at which the current situation would be discussed.
