Russia is ready to consider the resumption of air traffic with Georgia. This was stated to journalists by the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Grigory Karasin.

"We are ready to discuss it [the problem of resuming air traffic]. I think that it will be solved sooner or later," Karasin said.

Karasin found it difficult to name specific dates. At the same time, he said that he maintains frequent contacts with the special representative of the Prime Minister of Georgia for the settlement of relations with the Russian Federation, Zurab Abashidze, and expects to hold a face-to-face meeting with him in September-October of this year.

"The contacts are quite useful, they bring good results in solving practical issues, including humanitarian issues, transport issues. We will continue our work," Karasin stressed.

Direct flights between Georgia and Russia have been suspended since July 8, 2019 by the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin amid protests in Tbilisi caused by the arrival of Russian communist deputy Sergei Gavrilov in Georgia.

The meetings of Abashidze and Karasin are a format of an informal dialogue between Georgia and the Russian Federation, which has been held since 2012 in the absence of diplomatic relations. Economic and humanitarian issues are mainly discussed at these meetings. The parties last met in Prague in May 2021.
