Administrative responsibility is being introduced for desecrating the flags of the European Union, NATO and other international organizations of which Georgia is a member. Persons who desecrate the flag of a foreign state with which Tbilisi has diplomatic relations, installed in a state institution or inside it, will also be brought to justice.

On July 26, the bill was discussed at a meeting of the parliamentary bureau. It is planned to introduce a special article in the "Code of Administrative Offenses", according to which the above actions provide for a fine of 1000 lari (a little more than 300 dollars). Repeated desecration of the flag will entail a financial sanction in the amount of 2000 lari (about 650 US dollars) or administrative arrest for up to 15 days.

The initiators of the bill are both representatives of the ruling party and the opposition: Speaker of the Parliament Kakha Kuchava and deputies Alexander Elisashvili, Pridon Inja, Khatuna Samnidze, Nikoloz Samkharadze and Badri Japaridze.

Recall that on July 5-6, riots took place in the center of Tbilisi near the Georgian parliament building. They were organized by members of radical groups opposed to the "March of Dignity" (Tbilisi Pride). At the same time, aggressive people beat journalists – a total of 53 media employees were injured, one of whom later died. They also twice tore down the EU flag installed in front of the Georgian parliament building.
