In the last five years, the proportion of orphans in Sinjar has grew up markedly as a result of Yazidi genocide caused by a terrorist group called Islamic State in 2014, that cause killing of thousands of men, kidnapping thousands of women and children. There are around 2,745 Yazidi orphans according to the formal latest statistics from ‘’the office for Yazidi Abductees’’ which is approved by the United Nations (UN), Ezidi24 to be updated the suffering of Sinjar orphans in displacement camps facing difficult circumstances and neglected by official government boards.

Yazidi Genocide

The following paragraphs will define the situation of Yazidi orphans left by recent Yazidi genocide which led to a humanitarian catastrophe, which continues to be suffered by the Yazidi people five years ago due to the Islamic state terrorist invasion known as “Daesh” for the largest Yazidi city in Iraq and the world, a city called Sinjar or Shingal which left behind tens of mass graves, thousands of martyrs and orphans. Psychotherapy

Ameen Abdo Dinney is a Yazidi student at the University of Mosul, Faculty of Education for Human Sciences Department of History in an interview with Ezidi24: Daesh prepared Yazidi children militarily for battles who were kidnapped with their families. Children were recruited and trained in camps on ideological terrorism thoughts according extremism educational curricula which were extremely used in Daesh propaganda videos, the children were prepared psychologically to be adopted in Daesh ideology, through the psychological influences to control children simply. So that the Yazidi children to forget their customs and traditions daily life.

After children’s liberation from Daesh, the ideas and bad habits they have taken from “Daqash” are still live with them, therefore they need good health care and keeping an eye on by their relatives and the officials to provide suitable environment for them; such as building an orphanage as well as providing all the necessary living needs and rehabilitation centers said Ameen.

“The rehabilitation programs require high international expertise to prepare and implement to these children,” he said. The extent of the violations against the Yazidi children is terrible issue; it is very complex in all its details. It cannot be predicted by normal means or treatment. The orphaned children need to undergo multifaceted rehabilitation phases, addressing the psychological trauma which affected the children, as well as the effects of post-participation in violence, and opening educational courses for them including the provision of all entertainment needs.

Recruiting Yazidi children

The Islamic State has rehabilitated Yazidi children militarily and has been recruited in three phases:

1 – The first phase is Daesh tortured Yazidi children physically through beatings, starvation and work as well as teaching them Islamic law “Sharia laws” according to Daesh ideology and beliefs because they considered Yazidis as infidels according to Daesh ideology.

2. The second phase is the legitimacy phase for the ages of 5-10 years: where they trained on ideological terrorism thoughts according extremism educational curricula which were extremely used in Daesh propaganda videos, the children were prepared psychologically, through the psychological influence to control children simply.

3. The third Phase is the rehabilitating children in training and military recruitment: where children trained militarily in using of weapons, fighting and clashes, the industrializing explosions, IEDs, ambushes and carrying out intrusions.

Necessities are not of the required level

“Jafar Simo” Director of the Yazidi Affairs Office in Dohuk province told Ezidi 24: Daesh had a significant impact on whole Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in particular while the major blow was against the Yazidi people after the genocide on August 3, 2014 in Sinjar. The genocide left out thousands of martyrs, orphans, thousands of abducted and kidnapped, there are still thousands of Yazidi people missing in Iraq, Syria and some other places, while the issue around 3,000 orphans is a tragic humanitarian issue that must be addressed and supported by all sides.

“The government of Kurdistan works and supports survivors and orphans, but not at the required level,” Simo said. “The government should provide the best aid and rehabilitate these survivors psychologically, physically, and morally by opening special care centers for them.

He also addressed “the office for Yazidi Abductees has consistently tried to serve these children through the Directorate General of Health in Dohuk and humanitarian aid NGOs, but again I am reconfirming that these services are not at the required level ” the Directorate of Yazidi Affairs in Dohuk has a plan to provide assistance to these survivors, if there will be sufficient support from the government or any other agencies we will surely help them”.

The displacement camps are a closed environment for Yazidi children

Faisal Khalaf Avdy is a Yazidi civil activitst and teacher at Shariya refugee camp talks to Ezidi24 “The proportion of orphans in Iraq has significantly increased during very last period; the number is reaching 5 million children orphaned of both genders, because of sectarian violence in the country and Daesh terrorist invasion as known the Islamic State in recent years. Here, we will take Shariya camp a displaced Yazidis from Sinjar as an example of orphans, where the camp has took more than 200 orphan children of both genders and mostly under the age of 15, living with parents or relatives in tragic conditions”

“Children do not have enough space to entertain with, which increases their feeling of pain and loneliness between 4 square meters of plastic tent. They also need awareness sessions and psychological care, because there is no one to carry out their cause. This is primarily responsibility of the Ministry of Social Affairs and humanitarian aid NGOs. On the other hand, there are children who have not been registered in government data base system as Iraqi citizen; these children face poverty and homelessness in the society, including orphan children who are survivors of Daesh criminal oppression. The government and humanitarian NGOs should support them.

An appeal to build an orphanage for psychosocial care

“The families and relatives of these orphans suffer from bad psychological problems on an ongoing daily suffers as a result of toughness and the closed environment of their children in the camps,” Faisal said. This hardship and others issues necessitate moving towards it as quickly as possible, because they need support and care in many aspects. This is responsibility of everyone but more the Ministry of Social Affairs and Humanitarian NGOs intervention, because they need support and care in several respects. First, it needs to create a home or an orphanage for their own psychosocial care and to bring them to school and education. Keeping these orphans without special care and education, it will have a real negative side on their future and the future of their relatives. Here, we demand to whom it may concern to intervene and move forward to find appropriate solutions for this oppressed people.

It is being long time that Sinjar/Shingal city has liberated from Daesh terrorists; but there are still thousands of Yazidi displaced in the camps of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. While there is no any reconstruction process, providing the necessary services or building special centers for orphans to take care and treat them well.
