The lives of Yazidi children in Iraq and Syria are currently in danger as drought and low water levels affect the main rivers in their countries and deprive millions of people of access to water, Save the Children said on Monday ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference 2021.
One of the Yazidi refugees says: "Before, at least, we had wheat for baking bread for our children. Now we have nothing to water our lands with, there is no precipitation in the vicinity of camps for refugees and displaced persons. The weather in the region has completely changed. Drinking water has decreased, springs have dried up. The employment rate is low," said Usef, who lives in a refugee camp.
Due to water shortages, more than 56,000 cases of acute diarrhea have also been reported in northeast Syria since April 2021 and more than 17,000 cases of leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease.
Save the Children has stated that it needs more funding to respond to this crisis, prioritize water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and provide children with food in the coming winter months. Also, the organization desperately needs additional efforts to eliminate and mitigate the effects of water scarcity and climate change.
The organization estimates that in northern Iraq and Syria, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic at the beginning of last year, the number of people in need of emergency assistance in the field of water supply, sanitation and hygiene has reached 800,000 people.
A special shortage of humanitarian aid, as always, is observed in camps for Yazidi refugees and displaced persons.
