The topic of the Yazidi community in Armenia will be discussed at the UN, at the thirty-fifth session of the human rights Council

On January 23, 2020, the UN human rights Council for the universal periodic review will consider the state report of Armenia, as well as the reports of public organizations of Armenia at its thirty-fifth session.

The reports of public organizations reflect the following points:

Equality and non-discrimination, civil and political rights

• The right to life, liberty and security of person
• Administration of justice, including impunity, and the rule of law
• Fundamental freedoms and the right to participate in public and political life
• Prohibition of all forms of slavery
• Right to privacy

Economic, social and cultural rights

• The right to work and to fair and favourable working conditions
• Right to social security
• The right to an adequate standard of living
• Right to health
• Right to education

The report also reflects issues of rights and freedom of national minorities in Armenia:
* The state was recommended to develop a national strategy for the protection of the ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic identity of minorities and to create conditions for its promotion in accordance with the Declaration on the rights of persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities.
* The state party was recommended to organize awareness campaigns on minority rights in order to raise awareness among citizens about the existence of different religions and cultures.

* The UN report recommended that the state conduct an awareness-raising campaign that encourages the use of minority languages in contacts with local administrations.

* It was recommended that the state ensure proper coverage and teaching of the culture and history of national minorities in all schools, including schools where children belonging to the majority of the population study, and that they cover all aspects of the culture of national minorities as an integral part of Armenian society.

The UN report reflected the recommendations of the Yezidi Center for Human Rights, which operates in Armenia (NGO). Issues of rights and freedoms of the Yazidi community were raised. The organization recommended that the state " intensify its efforts to address without further delay the difficulties faced by Yazidi children, in particular girls, in terms of access to education.
