Passenger traffic of the Georgian railway in 2019 reached a record high and amounted to more than three million people

The cargo turnover of the Georgian railway in 2019 increased by 9% compared to 2018, the company said in a statement.

In 2012, the company's cargo turnover amounted to 20.1 million tons, and then began to decline annually. As a result, in 2018, the cargo turnover reached 10 million tons, and last year, for the first time in these years, it increased to 10.8 million tons.

The growth of cargo turnover, according to GZHD, is due to both the growth of carriage traffic and the growth of container traffic. In addition, since 2018, GZHD has been carrying out transit transportation of wheat and coal from Kazakhstan. In particular, container traffic increased by 39% and amounted to 78.9 thousand TEU, and the increase in profits from container traffic was 43%.

JSC "Georgian railway" is a monopolist of railway freight and passenger transportation in the country. Meanwhile, the state may soon sell the right to transport to private companies, keeping only the infrastructure part.

The development of transit routes through Georgia is one of the most important priorities of the government of Georgia, which is investing heavily in this area.
