The budget of the state program for supporting villages in 2020 will remain unchanged and will amount to 40 million lari (almost 13.8 million dollars). This was reported today by the press service of the Ministry of regional development and infrastructure of Georgia.

The village support program was launched in 2009 and ran until 2016. The initiative funded an average of 100 projects each year. After the termination of the program, requests for its renewal were repeatedly received from local authorities to the Central authorities.

They pointed out that in the villages, problems with infrastructure were ignored, since the work of the Ministry of regional development is focused on the implementation of large-scale projects. The ruling Georgian dream party decided to restore the program in 2019.

The village support program provides for the implementation of small infrastructure projects. We are talking about the construction of irrigation systems and drainage channels, shore protection works, laying internal roads, creating outdoor lighting, landscaping areas adjacent to schools, sports infrastructure, etc.. Now bus stops have been added to this list.

As part of the program, up to 4.8 thousand projects were implemented in 2019. More than three thousand General meetings were held in municipalities, during which local residents chose which projects to spend budget money on.

Thus, 376 projects were implemented in Guria, 1042 in Imereti, 366 in Kakheti, 536 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, 275 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, 1061 in Samegrelo – Zemo-Svaneti, 309 in Samtskhe – Javakheti, 399 in Kvemo-Kartli, and 447 in Shida Kartli.

Each project was allocated from 10 to 20 thousand lari (approximately 3.5 thousand to 7 thousand dollars). The amount depended on the size of the village.

In addition to small grants, in 2019, co-financing of municipalities amounted to 6 million lari ($2 million). The funds went to repair roads and street lighting, water systems, sports infrastructure, cleaning cemeteries, and cleaning gutters.
