From the third quarter of 2020, the national statistics service will collect data on employment and unemployment using a new methodology. According to the Executive Director of the Department, Gogita Todradze, according to the new methodology, only those people who offer their service or product on the market, so-called sell their work, will be considered employed. And a person who is engaged in agriculture on his site and uses the harvest only himself, and not from a commercial point of view, will no longer be considered employed.

"According to the new methodology, persons who are no longer market-oriented will be excluded from the category of self-employed. That is, if they do not sell more than 50 percent of the crop on the market. Such people will no longer be considered self — employed," said the head of the National statistics service.

According to Gogiti Todradze, starting from the third quarter of 2020, that is, after the national statistics service publishes indicators of employment and unemployment calculated using the new methodology, employment indicators may change radically.

According to Gogita Todradze, the new standard has already been implemented in about 20 countries, including Armenia, Moldova, and EU member States. As for Georgia, according to Todradze, during the first two quarters of 2020, data will be collected using questionnaires using both the new and old methodology, and data for the third and fourth quarters will be analyzed by the National statistics service entirely using the new methodology.

"The country employs about 700 million people, but it should be taken into account that about 800,000 people are self-employed. These include, for example, people who work for free on their land, taxi drivers, nannies, Tutors, etc. the Change in the new methodology mainly concerns self-employed people who work in rural areas on their land. Their number is quite large. About 70-80 percent of these 800,000 work in rural areas. Accordingly, it is planned to retrain them according to the new methodology, " Gogita Todradze said.
